Classes and Builds#
“Become the Lord of the Fell Omen, the one to mend the ring.” — Guidance
Elden Ring offers the greatest freedom in class and build crafting of any FromSoftware game. Your class decides where you start, never where you end up — late in the game, any character can be respecced into any archetype. This page takes you from “which class should I pick” all the way to “how to assemble a build,” so you can skip the detours.
The Ten Starting Classes#
Each class ships with its own starting gear and stat leanings. Knowing the differences helps you find an opening that suits you fast.
| Class | English Name | Stat Leanings | Role | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Samurai | Samurai | Dexterity | An iai-draw master and the poster child of bleed builds | Low |
| Vagabond | Vagabond | Strength/Vigor | A heavily armored warrior, offense and defense in one | Low |
| Warrior | Warrior | Dexterity/finesse | Twin blades in a whirlwind | Medium |
| Prisoner | Prisoner | Intelligence/Dexterity | A magic-dexterity hybrid | Medium-High |
| Confessor | Confessor | Faith/Dexterity | A holy-seal swordfighter | Medium |
| Astrologer | Astrologer | Intelligence | A pure sorcerer | Medium-Low |
| Prophet | Prophet | Faith | An incantation envoy | Medium-High |
| Bandit | Bandit | Dexterity | A dagger assassin | High |
| Hero | Hero | Strength | A greataxe juggernaut | Medium |
| Wretch | Wretch | Balanced | A blank-slate challenge | Very High |
A Closer Look at Each Class#
Samurai#
Starts with the Uchigatana, a Longbow, and a throwable blowpipe. Charged heavy attacks with the Uchigatana build up Hemorrhage, dishing out frightening damage from the very start — widely considered one of the best openings, loved by newcomers and veterans alike.
Strengths: Bleed is extremely strong early on, ranged and melee in one kit, smooth dodging.
Vagabond#
Starts in heavy armor with naturally high HP and stamina; paired with a shield, defense is rock solid. The first pick for every player who “doesn’t want to suffer” — although the thighs are exposed (no leg armor), the frame is tough enough.
Strengths: Highly forgiving, can tank and trade, a godsend for cautious beginners.
Warrior#
Starts with twin curved swords, focused on Dexterity with naturally high dexterity and stamina. Dual-wielded light weapons attack extremely fast, and paired with Ashes of War (such as jumping slashes) they rack up poise damage at high frequency. The downside is a demanding execution barrier.
Strengths: Attack speed, stance-break efficiency, pure fluidity.
Prisoner#
Starts with an estoc plus a staff, mixing melee and sorcery — the template opening for “Intelligence-Dexterity” builds (sorcery plus Dexterity weapons). Suits players who like to weave melee and magic together.
Strengths: Dual mastery of physical and magic damage, flexible rhythm.
Confessor#
Starts with a curved sword, a shield, and holy-seal incantations — a balanced “Faith” opening that can cast healing and holy incantations. Ideal for a judgment-style build centered on holy seals and melee.
Strengths: Self-sufficient healing, holy damage counters rot-type enemies.
Astrologer#
Starts with a staff and three spells (mostly glintstone sorceries), the pure-caster template. High Intelligence scaling lets early spells clear most enemies — a favorite of mage players and “glass cannon” fans.
Strengths: High burst, safe at range, superb crowd-clearing.
Prophet#
Starts with a short spear and a seal, a Faith-based incantation build. Early incantations lag behind sorceries in quantity and power, but late-game holy incantations (like lightning strikes and black flame) are devastating.
Strengths: Late-game holy power, counters specific enemies.
Bandit#
Starts with a dagger and shortbow; base stats are low (especially HP), so early forgiveness is minimal — not for beginners. But for players who love one-shot backstabs and bleed, it is a superb template.
Strengths: Backstab multipliers, bleed efficiency (requires Arcane investment).
Hero#
Starts with a greataxe, stats heavily skewed toward Strength — the Strength build template. Paired with heavy weapons and greatshield play, it produces a brainless, steamrolling “brute force solves everything” style.
Strengths: Efficient one-hit trades, crushes small enemies.
Wretch#
Starts with every stat at 10, naked, with nothing but a stick. No gear, no advantages — born purely for challenge. Yet it offers immense late-game build freedom, and veterans use it to show off.
Strengths: Ultimate build freedom, the most balanced stats.
Core Stats Explained#
Understanding the stats is how you learn where to spend points. Below are the most-used stats and their key breakpoints.
| Stat | Effect | Key Breakpoints | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vigor | HP | 40 / 60 (soft caps) | The higher the better; always first priority |
| Endurance | Stamina + equip load | 25-40 | Guarantees enough rolls |
| Strength | Strength weapon damage | Soft cap around 50-80 | Primary stat |
| Dexterity | Dexterity weapons + cast speed | Soft cap around 50-80 | Primary stat |
| Intelligence | Sorcery damage | Soft cap around 50-80 | Mage primary stat |
| Faith | Incantation damage | Soft cap around 50-80 | Holy build primary stat |
| Arcane | Bleed/poison/drop rate | Soft cap around 45-60 | Niche builds |
| Mind | FP pool | 30-40 | Casters only |
| Strength (gear matching) | Meeting weapon requirements | Depends on the weapon | Requirements are usually modest |
Iron rules for leveling:
- Vigor always comes first (get to 40 early)
- Diminishing returns after pushing your main stat to its soft cap (around 50-60)
- Only casters and skill-focused builds need to stack FP
Five Popular Build Archetypes#
1. Bleed Build#
Uses bleed buildup to deal percentage-of-HP damage — terrifying against high-HP bosses.

| Talismans | Shard of Alexander, bleed talismans, combo boosters |
| Ashes of War | Bleed affinities (Occult/Blood) |
| Playstyle | Fast, frequent hits to stack bleed and shave off max HP |
2. Sorcery Build#
Pure ranged spell damage — high burst, safe, a classic glass cannon.
| Item | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Main stats | Intelligence + Mind |
| Weapons | Various glintstone staffs |
| Spells | Comet, Ranni’s Dark Moon, Carian sword sorceries |
| Talismans | Terra Magicus, Carian Filigreed Crest |

3. Faith / Incantation Build#
Holy incantations blend damage with support — healing, lightning strikes, and holy AoE.
| Item | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Main stats | Faith + Mind |
| Seals | Sacred seals of every school |
| Incantations | Lightning strikes, black flame, holy light, healing |
| Playstyle | Damage and sustain in one, counters rot/undead types |
4. Strength Build#
Heavy-weapon steamrolling — one swing, one kill. Simple and brutal.
| Item | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Main stats | Strength + Vigor |
| Weapons | Greataxes, great hammers, colossal swords |
| Talismans | Heavy boosters, impact talismans |
| Playstyle | Heavy hits for stance breaks, face-to-face brawling, heavy armor |
5. Faith-Bleed / Hybrid Build#
An advanced playstyle that merges incantations with bleed, covering both ranged and melee with free-form building.
Respec (Rebirth)#
Midway through the game, you can respec at Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, using a Larval Tear to redistribute your stats. That means no fear of wasted points — experiment with different archetypes freely.
| Respec Basics | Details |
|---|---|
| Location | Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon (boss of the Academy of Raya Lucaria in Liurnia) |
| Cost | Larval Tear |
| Frequency | Can be done multiple times |
| Note | Respec keeps your current level and redistributes stat points |
Equip Load and Dodging#
Equip Load comes in light/medium/heavy tiers that directly affect roll speed and recovery. “Medium load” is the comfort zone for most builds.
| Load Tier | Roll | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Light (≤30%) | Fastest, more i-frames | Advanced players |
| Medium (30-70%) | Standard | ★★★★ Most builds |
| Heavy (70%+) | Very slow, with recovery | Tank/heavy builds |
Which Build Should You Pick#
| Your Preference | Suggested Build |
|---|---|
| Simple and brutal | Strength build or Samurai bleed |
| Safe ranged play | Sorcery build |
| Sustain and counters | Faith/incantation build |
| Hands-on feel | Warrior dual blades or Bandit bleed |
| A self-imposed challenge | Wretch |
Final Thoughts#
No build is absolutely strongest — only the one that suits you best. Part of Elden Ring’s joy is constant trial, error, and tinkering. Clear the game once with a recommended build, then respec and get fancy — you’ll find the game runs far deeper than you imagined.
Remember: Vigor always comes first, damage comes from gear, and builds are a matter of taste. May you find your own path to Elden Lord in the Lands Between.
