Cleric Beast Guide#
In Central Yharnam in Bloodborne, when the Hunter climbs up onto the great bridge leading to the Cathedral Ward, they run into the first truly giant beast—the Cleric Beast. It is not a foe blocking the road so much as the first lesson in size the game gives a new Hunter: unlike the humanoid bosses later on, which are dominated through gun parries, the Cleric Beast forces you to learn something else—circle around to its flank, watch the startup of its attacks, and fight right up against something enormous.
Boss Overview#
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Location | Central Yharnam, on the great bridge leading toward the Cathedral Ward |
| Nature of encounter | Optional boss (can be avoided first and bypassed via a side path) |
| Recommended level | 15-20 |
| Weakness | Fire |
| Parriable | No (huge frame, non-humanoid attacks; a Visceral Attack cannot be triggered) |
| Number of phases | Single phase |
| Size | Extremely large; frontal sweeps cover a very wide area |
| Reward for killing it | A large amount of Blood Echoes, and it opens the route to the Cathedral Ward |
The core teaching point of the Cleric Beast is the size difference: a single one of its sweeps can cover more ground than the Hunter’s whole body, so fighting it head-on almost guarantees taking damage. It is also one of the very few giant bosses that appears right at the start of the game yet specifically requires the player to fight pressed against its side.
The Encounter and the Arena#
The Cleric Beast sits on the great bridge in Central Yharnam that leads to the Cathedral Ward. Starting from the Central Yharnam lamp, pass through the stretch with the dogs and the axe-wielding bruisers, climb the ladder up onto the bridge, and the fight triggers.
The arena is a bridge that is wide laterally but relatively limited lengthwise, with railings on both sides. Two things are worth noting before the fight starts:
- The bridge deck is long, so when it pounces you do not need to dodge sideways in a hurry; you can stretch the distance lengthwise to give yourself room to observe.
- If you feel your level is too low, there is no need to force a fight on the bridge. You can fall back to Central Yharnam, take the side path that bypasses toward the Cathedral Ward first, and come back for this fight once your level and weapon have caught up.
Attacks and How to Read Them#
The Cleric Beast is huge but its movements are not fast, and the great majority of its attacks have a clear startup posture. Recognising that startup is the core of this fight.
| Attack | How to read it | How to avoid it |
|---|---|---|
| One-arm sweep | One arm swings back to the side, then sweeps across | Roll toward the other side of its body, the side that opens up |
| Two-arm slam | Both long arms rise above its head at once, then it pauses briefly | Roll backward the moment the arms go up, leaving the frontal hitbox |
| Forward pounce | It leans forward and lowers its body, then lunges at the Hunter | Roll diagonally forward, out past its shoulder |
| Close-range grab | It crouches low and reaches one arm toward the Hunter | Move to its side before the grab lands; never back straight away |
| Roar | It leans back and lets out a low bellow | Use the recovery window to retreat or to hit its flank |
It is worth stressing that after the Cleric Beast slams its fists into the ground, there is usually a brief gap in its recovery. That is the Hunter’s main opportunity to get in close and deal damage. Its attack order is not rigid, but every move has a stretch of preparation time visible to the naked eye before it swings, so on first meeting it is better to watch one round through rather than rush in.
Combat Strategy#
First Approach: Hug the Flank and Hit the Arms#
Most of the Cleric Beast’s attacks come from directly in front or directly above, so standing in front of it is the easiest place to be hit. The correct way to fight it is:
- After locking on, close in on its flank and move along the narrower part of its body.
- Wait for it to swing and miss, then move in during the recovery gap and land two or three hits on an arm or the side of its waist.
- When it turns or raises an arm again, immediately roll with the motion to the other side, always staying out of its front.
While pressed against the side of its body, its sweeps pass over the Hunter’s head or off to the side, and the hit rate drops sharply. This is the universal criterion for dealing with large bosses, but the Cleric Beast demonstrates the point especially clearly.
Weakness: Fire#
The Cleric Beast has a noticeably higher damage intake from fire. Bring plenty of Molotov Cocktails into the fight and throw them during its recovery stagger or the pause after a roar; that is far more efficient than plain melee. If you have already put fire on your weapon, combining it with flank damage also shortens the fight considerably.
On Part Breaks#
The Cleric Beast’s head and arms can be treated as priority targets. Attacking the same part continuously and building up enough damage may trigger a part break—the part shows a clear wounded reaction, and damage dealt to that part increases. In practice there is no need to chase it deliberately; hitting the head or arms while attacking from the flank builds it up on its own.
Preparation and Equipment#
| Category | Item | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon | The starting Saw Cleaver or Saw Spear | Fast swings, making it easy to sneak in extra hits during recovery gaps |
| Weapon | The extended form after transforming | Longer reach, good for aiming at the head and arms |
| Item | Molotov Cocktails | The main damage tool; the best return comes from hitting the fire weakness |
| Item | Blood Vials | Baseline healing; bring a full stock for the first attempt |
| Attire | Any medium-weight set | This fight is mostly about movement, so there is no need to force the load down |
Refill your Blood Vials and stock up on Molotov Cocktails before the fight and that is enough. The demands this boss fight places on your stat allocation are not high; the real priority is the two things you have to learn: staying on its flank and reading the startup.
Common Mistakes and Corrections#
| Mistake | Consequence | Correct approach |
|---|---|---|
| Trading blows directly in front | Hit repeatedly by sweeps or slams | Always circle around to its rear flank |
| Getting cornered at the bridge end | Nowhere to retreat, crushed by the pounce | Keep an escape route back toward the middle of the bridge |
| Focusing on damage and forgetting the startup | Knocked flat by the slam | After every approach, first confirm whether it is winding up |
| Standing still after throwing a Molotov from the front | Left inside the attack range after the throw | Roll to the side immediately after throwing |
| Trying to force a gun parry | No Visceral Attack possible, you just eat a hit | Give up on parries; use dodging and the flank instead |
What Happens After the Kill#
Once the Cleric Beast is dead, the route at the end of the bridge is opened. The Hunter can continue along the bridge toward the Cathedral Ward and reach deeper maps and stronger enemies. The Cleric Beast itself does not change phases midway the way Father Gascoigne does; taking it down is closer to a session of getting used to size—the super-large bosses you meet later in the Chalice Dungeons and in the rest of the game basically all follow the same underlying logic of hugging the flank, reading the startup, and looking for the recovery.
