“The Elden Ring, shattered.” — opening narration

The story of Elden Ring begins with a devastating collapse. In the land called the Lands Between, the law of the Erdtree once ruled everything, and the Elden Ring itself was the embodiment of the world’s order. The moment the Ring was shattered, law dissolved, the demigods launched wars over the Great Runes, and the whole world sank into endless strife and decay.

The Origin of the World: The Order of the Erdtree#

The history of the Lands Between stretches back to a mythic timeline. Getting the background straight first will help you understand the quests, endings, and the words and deeds of every NPC that follow.

Era Event Key Figures
Ancient times The Eternal Cities versus the Greater Will The Greater Will, the twin birds
Age of Marika Marika becomes the vessel of the Golden Order; the Ring is established Marika, Radagon
The Shattering The Ring is smashed; the Great Runes scatter Marika, the demigods
The Strife Demigods wage the Shattering War over the Great Runes Each demigod and their generals
Now The Tarnished are guided back to the Lands Between The protagonist (you)

The Greater Will and the Erdtree#

The Greater Will is a mysterious power standing above the Lands Between, ruling the world through the Erdtree and its “Golden Order” of universal oneness. The Erdtree itself is both an object of faith and the foundation of the cycle of life — human souls and Destined Death alike are bound to it.

Queen Marika#

Queen of the Lands Between and the vessel of the Golden Order. She is both a goddess and the keeper of the Elden Ring. Yet one day, she shattered the Ring with her own hands — the motive and truth behind that act run through the entire main story, and are the key to the branching endings.

Radagon#

Marika’s consort of the Golden Order, and also Marika’s other self. This revelation lands with tremendous force during map exploration and the final boss fight — best experienced firsthand, so no further spoilers here.

The Aftermath of the Shattering#

After the Ring broke, the most immediate consequence was the scattering of the Great Runes and the frenzy of the demigods.

Demigod Domain Great Rune Held
Godrick Stormveil Castle Great Rune of the Golden Order
Rennala Queen of the Full Moon, Academy of Sorcery Great Rune of the Full Moon
Starscourge Radahn Caelid Great Rune of the Stars
Morgott Leyndell, Royal Capital Great Rune of the Royal Capital
Malenia The Haligtree Great Rune of the Scarlet Rot
Rykard Volcano Manor Great Rune of Blasphemy

Each demigod clings to a domain, yielding to none. The flames of war stretch from Stormveil to Caelid’s scarlet wastes, from the lakes of Liurnia to the royal capital on the Altus Plateau.

The Tarnished#

Amid this chaos, the “Tarnished” — those once exiled from the Lands Between — are summoned back. Your mission is to gather the Great Runes, strengthen yourself, and finally enter the Erdtree to become “Elden Lord”.

“Tarnished” is a blanket term for humans who lost the guidance of Grace. They once left this land, and now, at the unspoken behest of the Greater Will, they return. You are not the only Tarnished — you will meet others of your kind: some friendly, some cunning, some long since sworn to the demigods.

The Guidance of Grace#

Grace is the Tarnished’s only guide. It emits golden light pointing toward some road, some goal. But following Grace is not always right — in a world where the Ring has shattered, secrets often hide off the lit path, more important than the road itself.

The Core Gameplay Framework#

Elden Ring is not a linear action RPG in the traditional sense; it is a fusion of open world + Souls combat. Understanding this framework matters far more than memorizing any single boss’s moves.

1. Free Exploration#

You can ride freely across the entire continent, tackling enemies and regions in any order. The map is enormous, and nearly every corner hides a cave, dungeon, boss, or interesting NPC.

2. Souls Combat#

The combat rhythm sits between Dark Souls and Bloodborne: it emphasizes reading enemy moves, stamina management, and strategic pairing of melee/ranged/magic. Defense, rolling, and counters are all indispensable.

3. Character Builds#

You can allocate stats freely, forging wildly different playstyles: pure physical, pure magic, Faith, incantations, poison, bleed, frost, and more. This is FromSoftware’s most build-flexible game yet.

4. The Spirit System (Spirit Ashes / Spirit Summons)#

Summoning spirits with ashes to fight beside you enriches the single-player experience. From common soldiers to legendary heroes, a dozen-odd ashes cover every situation.

5. Multiple Endings#

No longer a single ending. Your choices — whether to accept the Order, which NPCs you help, how you handle certain key items — will determine the final ending path.

Pacing and the Difficulty Curve#

Stage Approximate Level Main Regions Difficulty Feel
Early game 1-30 Limgrave, Weeping Peninsula Adaptation phase, learning combat
Mid-game I 40-60 Liurnia, Caelid Build takes shape
Mid-game II 70-100 Altus, the capital Pressure rises
Late game 100-130 Mountaintops of the Giants, Farum Azula High-difficulty challenges
Endgame 130+ The Haligtree, the final battles The ultimate test

Co-op and PVP#

The game supports online co-op and invasions. You can:

  • Summon other players to help with bosses (co-op)
  • Be invaded by other players (your PvE world can be randomly invaded)
  • Enter arenas for one-on-one or multi-way PVP duels

Multiplayer consumes items such as the Furlcalling Finger Remedy, and matchmaking enforces level and weapon-upgrade limits in practice.

The Achievement System#

Elden Ring has 42 achievements in total, covering main-story achievements, regional achievements, and a handful of collection ones. For details, see the achievement list.

Why It’s Worth Playing#

If Sekiro proved FromSoftware’s peak of action design, Elden Ring is them pushing the “Souls” genre onto an open-world summit. It offers:

  • Unprecedented freedom and sense of exploration
  • A build system of remarkable depth
  • Stunningly beautiful scenery and art
  • An epic narrative about law, freedom, and cruelty

Whether you are a first-timer testing the Souls waters or a veteran checking your skills, the Lands Between are worth dropping every hesitation and diving in.

Art and Music#

Elden Ring’s artistic power is one of its souls. FromSoftware’s art team used a “Miyazaki-style” broken aesthetic to build a world both magnificent and desolate: the towering Erdtree, abandoned churches, scarlet-rotten wastelands — every frame like a painting.

The score comes from a veteran composer team, from Limgrave’s gentle strings to the surging symphonies of boss fights to the eerie atmosphere deep in the Haligtree; music and scenery fit hand in glove. Many players say the landscapes and music of the Lands Between alone are worth the price of admission.

Open-World Storytelling#

The game carries on the Souls tradition of “fragmented storytelling”: story clues are scattered across item descriptions, NPC asides, and environmental detail. The deeper you explore, the more of the truth behind the Shattering you can piece together. This “dig-deeper” approach to narrative is one reason so many players cannot put it down.

For Media and Ratings#

At launch, Elden Ring won near-unanimous acclaim from media and players alike, scored close to perfect on multiple platforms, and swept several Game of the Year awards that year. It is widely regarded as a milestone of the “open world + Souls” fusion, and was many players’ game of the year.

A One-Line Verdict#

If you can only play one open-world Souls game, it must be this one. If it’s your first Souls game, it may be hard — but it may also be the work most likely to make you fall in love with the genre.

Development History#

Elden Ring was directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, with George R. R. Martin — author of A Song of Ice and Fire, the source of Game of Thrones — invited to build the worldview and mythological backdrop. It was FromSoftware’s first deep collaboration with an outside writer on an original world, a singular fusion of Martin’s fantasy touch and Souls aesthetics.

Development took years, drawing on the rich experience FromSoftware accumulated across the Dark Souls series and Sekiro. The team brought open-world design, horseback riding, and spirit summoning into the Souls framework, creating an experience unlike anything before it.

Lore Keywords Cheat Sheet#

To understand the world of the Ring, a few keywords are essential:

Keyword Explanation
Elden Ring The embodiment of the world’s order, now shattered
Golden Order The ruling law of the Erdtree’s age
Destined Death The power that governs death
Great Rune Fragments scattered after the Ring was broken
Tarnished Humans who lost the guidance of Grace
Demigod Marika’s descendants, each holding a Great Rune
Greater Will The mysterious power standing above all
Haligtree Miquella’s sacred tree

A Note on Multiple Endings#

The game has several endings, many hinging on your key choices. On a first playthrough, we suggest choosing with your heart; explore the other ending lines systematically on NG+. The designers clearly want players to go multiple rounds — every ending holds its own reading of the world.

Map Scale and Design Philosophy#

The map design of the Lands Between is a textbook of open-world craft. It doesn’t pepper the world with question marks like many open worlds; instead, it hides the joy of exploration in natural scenery and roads. You will often change course for a distant landmark, a wisp of cooking smoke, or a tall tower — and discover an entire questline or hidden boss.

The developers encourage “curiosity-driven exploration”. Many major rewards lie off the main road, in map corners, beneath cliffs, in ruins and caves. Learning to observe and probe is the key to mastering this world.

Balancing Main Story and Side Content#

Many players agonize over “follow the main story, or wander everywhere”. My advice is both: when the current story feels too hard, go back, clear side quests, and level up in surrounding areas; when you feel strong again, push the story forward. Elden Ring’s pacing is entirely free — there is no “correct order”.

Why It Rewards Deep Play#

  • Ultimate freedom of exploration; every corner holds a story.
  • Replayability through diverse builds.
  • A visually and musically stunning experience.
  • The puzzle-like pleasure of a fragmented narrative.
  • A plot of rises and falls, thick with choices.

If you can let go of “completion anxiety” and slow down to savor the world, Elden Ring will give you an experience beyond imagination. That is exactly why it is called a work for the ages.

Final Advice for Every Player#

Whatever kind of player you are, here is some advice that transcends any build:

  1. Keep a sense of wonder: most of Elden Ring’s value lives in the surprise of discovery; don’t rush to spoil it all with guides.
  2. Record and mark: getting lost in an open world is normal; use map markers to remember important places.
  3. Accept death: it isn’t failure, it’s feedback. Adjust your approach and try again — you’ll keep getting stronger.
  4. Enjoy the journey: while chasing the credits, don’t forget to take in this world’s beauty and desolation.

This world was made for brave explorers. Put down your worries, take up your curiosity, and go write your own Ring legend. May we all become the true Elden Lord who walks into the glow of the Erdtree.
