Sorceries and Incantations#

Sorceries and Incantations

“The secrets of sorcery are written in the stars.” — words of a sorcerer

In Elden Ring, sorceries and incantations are two very different casting systems. Sorceries focus on high-burst ranged damage; incantations blend damage, healing, and support. This page breaks down both systems and adds a practical spell list.

Casting Basics#

Sorcery or incantation, casting requires three things:

Requirement Details
Staff / sacred seal The casting tool; decides which school of spells you can use
Memory slots How many spells you can carry; raised by Mind or by equipping a Memory Stone
FP Casting energy; stack Mind or refill with a flask

Memory Slots (Memory Slots)#

  • Base slots are limited; equip Memory Stones to add more.
  • More slots means more spells carried at once and more flexibility in combat.

Intelligence Sorcery Schools#

Intelligence staffs come mainly in glintstone and Carian lines, each with its own focus.

Glintstone Sorceries#

The main damage line, built on varied glintstone shots and bursts.

Spell Cost Effect Best For
Glintstone Pebble Low Fast, cheap projectile Early-game mainstay
Comet High High-damage laser Bosses
Carian Slicer Medium Quick piercing slash Elites
Greater Glintstone Sorcery Medium Wide area Crowds
Ranni’s Dark Moon High Powerful sorcery Major bosses

Carian Sorceries#

Melee-leaning magic that swings conjured swords up close — the core of the “spellsword” style.

Faith Incantation Schools#

Incantations are cast through sacred seals and cover healing, attacks, elemental counters, and party support.

Healing and Recovery#

Incantation Effect Best For
Heal Restores your own HP Sustain
Lord’s Heal Wide-area recovery Co-op
Cure/Flame Cleanse Removes status ailments Rot zones

Offensive Incantations#

Incantation Element Effect
Lightning Spear Lightning Mid-range throw
Black Flame Fire Lingering burn damage
Holy light Holy Counters undead/rot
Great Flame (Lava) Fire Area fire damage
Dragon Breath Varied Elemental breath

Staff and Sacred Seal Picks#

Staffs (for sorceries)#

Staff Source Trait Best For
Glintstone Staff Early game Balanced Beginners
Carian Staff Academy Boosts melee sorceries Mixed fights
Great Glintstone Staff Late game High Intelligence scaling Advanced casters
Lusat’s Staff Hidden Special-boost Maximum damage

Sacred Seals (for incantations)#

Seal Source Trait Best For
Oracle Seal Early game Healing boost Beginners
Holy Seal Regional Holy damage boost Anti-undead
Dragon Communion Seal Overworld Dragon breath boost Dragon builds
Great Seal Late game Balanced scaling All-round

Memory Slots and Loadout Pairing#

Configuring memory slots and spell sets sensibly keeps you ready for any situation in combat.

Sample Loadouts#

Combat Scenario Recommended Spell Set
General clearing Glintstone Pebble + area spell + mobility
Boss fights High single-target burst + ultimate + mobility
Crowds/invasions Area spell + healing incantation
Exploration Light spell + scouting + mobility

Casting Tips#

Tip Details
Cast on the move Shoot while walking; avoid standing still
Charged casting Hold to charge for extra power
Range control Keep enemies outside your cast range but inside yours
Use spirit ashes Let summons hold aggro while you fire from behind
FP flask Stock blue flasks for long fights

Stats and Builds#

Sorcery build stats#

  • Push Intelligence to around 50-80
  • Mind 30-40 to secure FP and casting frequency
  • Vigor first to 40 for survival

Incantation build stats#

  • Push Faith to around 50-80
  • Mind 30-40
  • Vigor first to 40

Common Misconceptions#

Misconception Correction
Mages are frail Medium armor fills the gap; don’t wear cloth only
More blue flasks is always better Balance red and blue
Spam one or two spells Use different spells against different enemies
Standing still to cast Casting while moving is safer

Advanced: Elemental Counters and Effects#

  • Holy: counters undead and Scarlet Rot enemies.
  • Fire: some enemies are weak to fire.
  • Lightning: effective against enemies in metal heavy armor.

Learning each region’s elemental weaknesses lets your sorceries and incantations hit twice as hard.

Final Thoughts#

Magic and incantations aren’t “cheating” — they are another stylized combat aesthetic. A mage can kite a boss from a mile away; an incantation user can turn the tide at the edge of death. Both are worth experiencing.

Pick a path, stack the right stats, carry a variety of spells, and go conquer the Lands Between with your build.

Balancing Magic and Melee#

Pure mages are safe at range but vulnerable up close, so advanced casters pair spells with melee options:

Combo Upside Notes
Spells + dagger Close-range counter Lifesaver
Spells + shield Defense Steady
Spells + mobility spell Kiting Agile
Carian sword + spells Hybrid damage Powerful

Caster Archetypes#

Pure Sorcerer#

  • High Intelligence, high Mind; kite everything from range.
  • Vulnerable up close — needs mobility and survival spells.

Skill + Sorcery Hybrid#

  • Sorceries handle ranged threats; melee skills handle close-ins.
  • A balanced style, recommended for intermediate players.

Support Caster#

  • Focuses on buffs and crowd control, backing up melee damage.

Common Casting Misconceptions#

Misconception Correction
Stacking Intelligence without Mind Not enough FP for big spells
Ignoring spell swapping Swapping spells is more convenient
Face-tanking while stationary Keep moving
Too many blue flasks Balance red and blue
Never charging Charged casts deal more damage

Configuring Your Memory Slots#

Memory slots are your spell “armory”; configure them well and you maximize your power:

  • Keep 1-2 crowd-clearing AoE spells ready.
  • Keep 1-2 high single-target spells (for bosses).
  • Reserve 1 mobility/escape spell.
  • Carry light/scouting magic when exploring.

With slots configured, your path as a mage gets much smoother. May your spells pierce every obstacle and light up every desperate battle in the Lands Between.
