Farming Guide#
Every growth resource in Elden Ring has to be farmed: Runes decide your level, smithing stones decide your weapon strength, and Larval Tears decide whether your build can start over. This chapter does not offer a copy-paste numbers table — values shift with patches, and memorizing spot lists is worth less than internalizing the mechanics. Once you understand the respawn cycle and the reward structure, you can plan an efficient route in any region yourself.
Understand the Mechanics First: Rune Economy and the Grace Respawn Cycle#
The Dual Identity of Runes#
Runes are both experience and currency: leveling up consumes them, and buying items from merchants — plus some upgrades — consumes them too. So rune farming always serves one of two goals — pushing levels, or building purchasing power. Before you start, decide which one this session is for; the criteria for picking spots and playstyles differ completely between the two.
Death Drop Rules#
On death, the runes you carry drop where you fell; return to the spot to recover them. But if you die again before recovering them, the previously dropped runes are permanently lost. From this follows a rule of thumb: when the runes you carry clearly exceed your next planned expense, level up or buy first before entering dangerous areas — never challenge an unfought boss while carrying a full level’s worth.
The Grace Respawn Cycle: The Foundation of All Farming#
Resting at or teleporting to a Site of Grace respawns all regular enemies and ground collection points across the map. This mechanic is the very foundation farming rests on — farming, at its core, is just the repeated execution of one loop:
- Anchor at a Site of Grace near the start of your route
- Clear mobs or gather along a fixed path
- Return to the Grace and rest
- Enemies and collection points reset; repeat the loop
Everything below — rune farming, mining, material gathering — applies this same loop.
Two Lines of Rune Boosts#
The game has two kinds of rune-gain boosts: one is a permanent talisman, the dung-beetle-shaped Gold Scarab, active while equipped; the other is a limited-time consumable, the pickled bird-foot items, active for a period after use. Using both together stacks. Check in-game item descriptions and your own testing for exact values; there are only two rules to follow: always keep the permanent one equipped, and use the consumable right before entering the farming loop — never let its timer burn while you travel.
Farming Runes: Criteria Beat Spot Lists#
Yield Is Decided by Three Variables#
Runes earned per unit of time depend on three variables: each enemy’s rune value, your clear speed, and the share of time spent traveling. From these you can build a checklist — test any spot against these cells:
| Criterion | Traits of an Efficient Spot | Traits of an Inefficient Spot |
|---|---|---|
| Enemy value | Late-game regions where per-enemy rune value far exceeds early game | The same effort in an early area yields pocket change |
| Clear speed | Wide-area skills or sorceries that cover a whole group at once | Scattered targets that must be fought one by one |
| Travel share | Grace just steps away from the mob cluster, an extremely short loop | Most of each loop spent running across the map |
| Counter pressure | Targets barely fight back or act slowly | High attack, high mobility, razor-thin margin for error |
The Baseline: Late-Game Regions Vastly Outearn Early Ones#
This is the baseline of farming in this game: with identical enemy setups, advancing one region further along the progression often multiplies your income. So when short on runes early on, the right move is not to ping-pong between low-value spots, but to keep opening the map — unlock new regions, light Graces, and level up along the way. Once progression is in place, the same skill level naturally earns a whole tier higher.
The Most Famous Efficient Spot: The Albinauric Cluster Beneath the Dynasty#
The universally acknowledged top spot in the game is Mohgwyn Palace: the lower road leading toward the dynasty’s heartland is lined with large numbers of Albinaurics. Why it’s efficient maps perfectly onto the checklist above —
- Targets barely fight back; counter pressure is near zero
- Dense and clustered; one wide-area attack covers the entire group
- The Grace sits right beside the route above the slope; travel share is minimal
How to get there: progress White-Faced Varre’s questline to receive a medal item that teleports you directly, letting you enter as early as mid-game; skipping the quest means waiting until the late main story to arrive.
There is no single right weapon — the criterion is “able to cover a wide field of targets below from high ground in one swing”: melee weapons with wide-area skills and wide-area attack sorceries both qualify. Whichever clears faster in your hands wins. Take the Sacred Relic Sword, tradeable from the final boss’s Remembrance: its skill’s sweeping wide arc suits this terrain perfectly; otherwise pick whatever fits your build.
A Counterintuitive Reminder#
The most expensive cost of rune farming is not enemy strength but the rune loss from dying. Whenever you first enter a new region, scout the Grace locations and walk the return path through before starting high-intensity loops — losing a large hoard at once hurts worse than any inefficient spot.
Smithing Stones: The Collection Ledger of Weapon Strength#
Two Parallel Upgrade Systems#
Regular weapons and “special weapons with exclusive skills” follow two upgrade lines: regular weapons use Smithing Stones, up to +25; special weapons use Somber Smithing Stones, up to +10. Materials don’t transfer between the two lines — identify which line your weapon belongs to before planning upgrade goals.
Gathering and Purchasing Mechanics#
- Mining spots are the primary source — Smithing stones come in bulk from the caves and tunnels scattered across each region. Mining spots respawn with Graces just like regular enemies, making them sustainably farmable; the deeper the region, the higher the stone tier it yields.
- Bell Bearings unlock purchases — Each region’s caves hold the corresponding Miner’s Bell Bearing; hand it to the merchant at the Roundtable Hold and that tier of smithing stone enters her permanent shop stock, buyable without limit. Rule of thumb: bell bearings are the root cure for the smithing stone problem — turn them in the moment you get them; every day earlier you finish, every day sooner you stop caving.
- The somber line works the same way — Somber Smithing Stones have their own bell bearings and purchase mechanics, on the same rhythm as regular stones: scout the cave, hand in the bearing, then buy from the shop.
The Final Tier: Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones#
Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones and Ancient Dragon Somber Smithing Stones are the last tier of the upgrade path and are mechanically one-time collectibles: fixed locations, limited quantity per playthrough, never stocked in shops, never mass-produced by respawns. Rule of thumb: decide which weapon each stone goes to before you spend it — they are the scarcest upgrade resources in the entire game; exact distribution and counts should be verified against what you actually find in game.
Larval Tears: Respec Mechanics and Usage Criteria#
The Larval Tear has exactly one use: hand it to Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon in the Grand Library to reset all attribute points, consuming one per respec; reconstructing your appearance at the same place is free.
For acquisition, Larval Tears concentrate in the underground areas: the water-themed maps around the Eternal Cities and the riverbeds of each underground river. Some are fixed chests and pickup points, others drop from the silver blob-like enemies unique to the underground. They do not increase with Grace respawns — the total per playthrough is limited, one fewer with each use.
From this follows the usage criterion: work out your plan on paper before respecing — which stats your weapon scales with, what theme your Physick and talismans follow — then do it in one shot. The Larval Tear is a “correction tool,” not an “experiment tool.”
Material Gathering: Applying the Respawn Cycle to Gathering#
Crafting materials fall into two broad categories, farmed the same way as mobs:
| Material Type | Typical Source | Gathering Method |
|---|---|---|
| Plant-type | Flowers, mushrooms, and other ground collection points | Circle a fixed set of spots, rest at a Grace to respawn, repeat |
| Drop-type | Materials dropped by specific enemies | Find where the target enemy clusters, apply the rune-farming loop |
The shared criterion for both: almost every crafting material’s item description states its habitat or origin — look for crystals in caves, mushrooms in damp shaded spots by water, bones near graveyards. When unsure of a source, read the item description first, then match it to terrain on the map — far more reliable than memorizing spot lists.
The same logic applies to collectibles picked up along the way: Golden Seeds increase flask charges, and Sacred Tears boost flask healing; they are distributed along main roads and at churches respectively. These are “grab on sight” collectibles — no need to detour and farm them — just keep an eye out for glowing saplings and church buildings while traveling.
Operating Rhythm of the Universal Loop#
- Anchor — Put the Grace at the start of the route; the endpoint must be this same Grace
- Buff up — Equip permanent talismans; use limited-time consumables right before entering the route
- Execute — Clear mobs or gather along the fixed path; don’t tangle with high-threat targets
- Recover — Rest at the Grace, respawning enemies and collection points
- Review — If more than half the loop was spent traveling, the spot is wrong; change regions rather than grinding on
FAQ#
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Short on runes early on — where should I farm? | Prioritize main-story progression to open the map. Late-game regions vastly outearn early ones, and grinding in place early is inefficient — keep opening the map, and once your level and area damage rise, income grows naturally. |
| What if I can’t recover my dropped runes? | Dying again before recovery loses them permanently. Rule of thumb: before entering a dangerous area, spend carried runes on levels or purchases first. |
| Who do I give bell bearings to? | The merchant at the Roundtable Hold. Once the Miner’s Bell Bearings are all turned in, the matching tiers of smithing stones become infinitely purchasable. |
| What item respecs, and where? | Larval Tears. Hand one to Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon to reset attributes, one per respec; appearance reconstruction is free. |
| Can the highest-tier smithing stones be farmed repeatedly? | Ancient Dragon stones are one-time collectibles and never respawn in quantity. Plan their use around target weapons; don’t waste them. |
| What rune-boost items exist? | Two lines: a permanent talisman (Gold Scarab) and limited-time consumables (pickled bird-foot items), effective simultaneously; exact values follow in-game item descriptions. |
| What level should I farm to? | Until your build comes together. Higher levels make co-op matchmaking harder; consider your multiplayer needs before rushing levels. |
| Do gathered materials respawn? | Yes. Ground collection points reset like regular enemies — rest at a Grace and reapply the same loop. |
Pre-Farm Checklist#
- Save limited-time buffs for the moment you enter the loop; never burn them while traveling
- Don’t carry more runes than you can afford to lose; bank large hoards first
- The route’s endpoint must be a Grace; leave no uncertain strong enemies midway
- String mining spots and collection points into the same route whenever possible — one rest, two kinds of yield
- Before respecing, write the stat plan out on paper
Closing Thoughts#
The essence of farming is not memorizing spot lists but assembling your own loops once you understand the respawn cycle. Spots change with progression stages; mechanics don’t: Graces respawn, late-game yields crush early ones, bell bearings unlock purchases, one-time collectibles never regenerate — keep these criteria in mind and you can work out the most efficient route for your own build on any map in the Lands Between.
