Donkey Kong Bananza Characters and NPCs Guide#
First, a scope note: there is no authoritative public roster covering every character in Donkey Kong Bananza, so this page only lists characters whose appearances can be confirmed from public information, organized into three groups — the hero duo, elders and NPCs, and the villains. For anything finer about when and where characters show up in the game, trust your own playthrough over any list.
Main Characters#
Donkey Kong#
The undisputed star of the show and one of Nintendo’s oldest characters: the original 1994 Donkey Kong arcade game was named after him, and Bananza is his first time back in the lead role of a 3D platformer since Donkey Kong 64 in 1999 (for where this entry sits in the timeline, see the series history page).
In this game, DK’s personality and movement are redefined around his fists. He doesn’t say much, and he expresses everything through destruction: ramming a wall is asking for directions, digging is searching, a ground slam is travel, and ripping off a chunk to hurl is how he picks a fight. Shigeru Miyamoto personally helped polish the “sense of weight” behind every action, and it all serves this characterization — every punch needs tonnage.
The points that matter from a guide perspective:
- Base moveset: DK starts with the full destruction kit (ramming, digging, slamming, throwing), and all five Bananza transformations are powered-up versions of him;
- Growth path: the “standard skills” section of the skill tree directly upgrades his base abilities;
- What to expect as a player: the design goal is terrain feedback on every input, and the adjustment period rarely lasts past the first layer.
Pauline#
A 13-year-old girl and the true narrative core of the game. She first appears as an “Odd Rock” — VoidCo has stripped her power and sealed her inside stone — and she joins Donkey Kong on his dive toward the Planet Core, gradually regaining her human form and her singing voice as the story progresses.
Few companions in a Nintendo 3D platformer carry this much functional weight. Pauline is, all at once:
| Role | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| Story lead | The companion of the wish journey, central to the hidden ending and the finale |
| Transformation trigger | Her song plus Bananergy triggers Bananza transformations (see the Bananza forms page) |
| Co-op character | Controlled by player two in two-player mode, aiming sonic shockwaves (see the co-op page) |
| Outfit character | Has her own outfit line (fossil outfits plus amiibo-unlocked costumes) |
Her age (13) and her relationship to the adult Pauline (mayor of New Donk City) remain a hotly debated prequel theory in the media — the standing position is still “media speculation, not officially confirmed.” The full discussion lives on the series history page.
Elders and Functional NPCs#
Kong Elder#
A confirmed major NPC, tied to two key beats: the story segment where Pauline regains her human form (the quest line about helping the elder restore the water level), and the Zebra Bananza unlock — gather the ancient record shards for the elder on the Freezer layer and the Zebra transformation is yours. The elder also embodies the recurring “elder event” storytelling pattern: a layer’s key mechanic is usually delivered through its elder.
Grumpy Kong#
An NPC mentioned in guide resources (the shapes.inc entry). The name is clearly personality-driven — “grumpy” — but public information records little about what she actually does, so this page won’t speculate. Whatever her requests and dialogue turn out to be in game, the game itself is the final word.
The Fractone Family#
The Fractones are the NPC family at the heart of the quest system: you take commissions from them, complete them, and earn Banandium Gems. Public information confirms at least three members by name — Smashintone, Growtone, and Glamtone — and the naming suggests a split across demolition, cultivation, and styling work that echoes each layer’s gameplay theme.
There is no public full roster of members or their quest types, so this page won’t attempt one. The guide-level takeaway is a single rule: check the quest board often — Fractone commissions are a steady, repeatable source of Banandium Gems (see the Banandium Gems page).
Style Shops and the Chip Exchange#
Two functional facilities round out the NPC ecosystem: Style Shops are the fossil-outfit stores (layer-lock rules on the fossils and outfits page), and the Chip Exchange sells skill points (the way to close the last stretch toward 749 + 125 Banandium Gems). Together they are the exchange terminals where the collection economy meets the progression economy.
The Villain Faction#
VoidCo’s Leader: Void Kong#
The head of VoidCo and the game’s main antagonist. His public screen time concentrates on three beats: the first encounter on the Lagoon layer (the game’s first proper boss fight), the closer to the branch segment after the Junction, and the final battle in the Planet Core region (see the boss battles page and the VoidCo page).
As a character, Void Kong’s defining trait is executive greed: he doesn’t want to destroy the underground world, he wants to run it like a mining operation. Banandium Gems are merchandise, layers are mining concessions, and Pauline’s power is an asset. That corporate-villain framing mirrors the player’s own collecting habit, and it is the most interesting contrast the story sets up.
The VoidCo Mining Operation#
“Every layer is penetrated by its mining business.” VoidCo’s presence is carried by mining facilities spread across all 17 layers: tunnels, machinery, engineering structures, and the landfill on the Landfill layer. From a character-guide standpoint, those facilities are characters in their own right — they are the first opponent you meet on every layer, and they double as treasure maps (see the distribution patterns on the secrets page).
Mapping Characters to Layer Challenges#
Match each major character to their functional home turf so you know what to do the moment you meet them:
| Character | Home turf | Player interaction |
|---|---|---|
| Pauline | Along for the whole ride | Transformation trigger + co-op second slot + outfit line |
| Kong Elder | Lagoon / Freezer | Water-level story + ancient records → Zebra unlock |
| Fractone family | Quest boards on every layer | Commissions for Banandium Gems |
| Style Shops | Shops on every layer | Fossil outfits (layer-locked) |
| Chip Exchange | Functional facility | Skill point purchases |
| Void Kong | Lagoon / after the Junction / finale | Three boss fights |
| VoidCo facilities | All 17 layers | Destructible structures + treasure maps |
The point of this map: every character’s “screen time” has been converted into gameplay nodes — you meet someone, and you know what to do next. A small, precise cast keeps the sense of progression crisp.
Master Table: Characters and Systems#
| Character | Affiliation | Guide takeaway |
|---|---|---|
| Donkey Kong | Protagonist | Full destruction moveset + vessel for the five transformations; the handling is the character |
| Pauline | Protagonist | Song triggers transformations; co-op second slot; own outfit line |
| Kong Elder | Elder NPC | Water-level story line + Freezer-layer ancient records → Zebra unlock |
| Grumpy Kong | NPC | Limited guide information; defer to the game |
| Smashintone / Growtone / Glamtone | Fractone family | Source of commissions; Banandium Gem income channel |
| Style Shops / Chip Exchange | Functional facilities | Fossil outfits / skill point purchases |
| Void Kong | Villain leader | Opponent in three key boss fights |
| VoidCo mining facilities | Villain faction | Destructible structures across every layer, doubling as treasure maps |
One closing observation: the cast here is deliberately light — a hero duo of one girl and one ape, a short list of functional NPCs, and a single dominant villain. That lightness gives Pauline’s companionship enough narrative room to breathe, and it makes destruction itself the most present character in the game.
The roster is short, but every member sits exactly on a key gameplay node — another subtractive win in character design from the Odyssey team.
