September 28 New-Release Golden Window: Honkai: Star Rail 4.6 ‘Before the Moonrise, We Dance with Beasts’ and a Release-Calendar Watch Before the Long Holiday#
Zhanlan Yingren | September 27, 2026
Hello everyone, Zhanlan Yingren here. As our editorial desk’s art editor, I tend to start from visuals and themes when I write. This installment is a little different — it’s not a full guide to one title, but an observation of an entire release window.
Tomorrow (September 28, a Monday) is the last working day before the 2026 Mid-Autumn and National Day long holiday. Honkai: Star Rail’s version 4.6, “Before the Moonrise, We Dance with Beasts”, chose exactly this day to go live, with new five-star character Pearl making her entrance; meanwhile, the Chinese folklore puzzle sequel The Rewinder 2 has already landed on Steam, well timed for catching up during the holiday. Sci-fi and Chinese folklore — two lines converging right at this holiday checkpoint.
Opinions differ inside the editorial desk. Zixing thinks pre-holiday updates are pure market calculation — “nail the timing window so players finish patching before the holiday starts.” Wubian adds from a live-ops angle: “The long holiday is the best retention window there is — nobody lets it go.” What I want to talk about is the themes and the art, and why Chinese-made content at this exact checkpoint brings sci-fi reverie and ink-wash folklore together on the same timeline.
1. Why September 28 of All Days: the Logic of Pre-Holiday Release Clusters#
First, the release window itself. September 28 sits only one or two working days before the Mid-Autumn and National Day holiday, and in publishers’ eyes that spot carries several natural “understandings”:
| Window advantage | What it means |
|---|---|
| A stocking window before the holiday | Players finish patching and pre-downloading new content before time off, then jump straight in during the holiday — retention and playtime both ride the vacation dividend |
| Covers the whole holiday | The update lands right before the long holiday, so live events can fill the entire break |
| Avoids day-one holiday congestion | Not launching on the holiday’s first day lets players finish downloads and updates before the break begins |
| A routine maintenance day | Monday is the standard maintenance day for domestic online and mobile games, making server downtime and relaunches easy to schedule |
One caveat I want to add: the “golden window” label is mostly an industry observation and a media phrase, not a quantitative standard set by any institution. It reflects publishers’ shared read on holiday traffic, not some written pact. What we players should really care about is — which content in this window is worth betting holiday time on.
2. Honkai: Star Rail 4.6 ‘Before the Moonrise, We Dance with Beasts’: an Unconventional Update#
2.1 Update timing and compensation#
Honkai: Star Rail version 4.6, “Before the Moonrise, We Dance with Beasts”, goes live on September 28, 2026, on PC, PS5, iOS, and Android. One detail worth noting — per the officially published per-timezone maintenance schedule, server maintenance falls in the early hours of Sunday/Monday rather than the game’s usual Tuesday or Wednesday. For domestic players that means the early Monday slot, with maintenance lasting about 5 hours. The developer has not explained why the maintenance date was moved, and that is one of the hotter discussion topics among players.
Version 4.6 pre-downloads opened at 14:00 on September 24, 2026. Downtime compensation is 300 Stellar Jades, paid to Trailblazers at Trailblaze Level 4 or higher as of 06:00 on September 28, 2026.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Version name | Before the Moonrise, We Dance with Beasts |
| Launch date | 2026/09/28 (Monday), all platforms in sync |
| Maintenance length | About 5 hours (early-Monday slot) |
| Pre-download opens | 2026/09/24 14:00 |
| Downtime compensation | 300 Stellar Jades |
| Compensation threshold | Trailblaze Level ≥4 before 06:00 on 9/28 |
2.2 New five-star character ‘Pearl’ and the new content#
The new playable character of version 4.6 is “Pearl” — five stars, Ice element, on the Path of Elation. She is a member of the Interastral Peace Corporation (IPC) and chief executive officer of Planarcadia, having formerly administered that planet, known for her immense computing power and rational decision-making.
In combat, Pearl is a support built around “damage soak plus buffs” in one package: she can spend “Certified Divine Song” to offset part of incoming damage for the whole team; she can also enter a “Deep Learning” state, study a chosen ally’s combat data and gain empowered attacks — if that ally is a Path of Elation character, the empowered attack adds Elation damage; if the entire team follows Elation, that ally even gains an extra turn. For Trailblazers running Elation teams, this is the card to watch this version.
Beyond the new character, this update includes: the limited five-star Light Cone “A Color Dedicated to Tomorrow” on rate-up; a limited five-star rerun in the first half of the version and another limited five-star’s return in the second half (per the in-game Warp calendar); new outfits for both Evanescia and Hyacine; a new “Astral Pet” gameplay mode in which Trailblazers gain pet-like creatures called Astral Imagea to accompany their adventures; and the main Trailblaze Mission story continues, with Pearl joining the Trailblazers into the “Life Sciences Institute” to uncover the truth behind the “weaponizing the body” conspiracy.
2.3 Why this maintenance timing got people talking#
Putting maintenance in the early hours of Sunday/Monday breaks from the usual fixed rhythm. For players, the most direct impact is server reopening time and holiday planning — September 28 is exactly the last Monday before the holiday, and the update lands just before time off. Though the developer hasn’t explained the date change, from a release-window view it forms a “slotted just before the holiday” coincidence with the pre-holiday traffic peak. That, too, is an observation, not a statement of official intent.
The version cycle runs about six weeks, and the holiday is only the opening — players finish maintenance into the new version, spend the holiday exploring new content, building Pearl, and pushing the main story; after the break, the version continues for a while as players digest banners and content at their own pace. So for veteran Trailblazers, September 28 is less a one-shot event pulse and more the starting gun of a “version marathon”.
3. The Chinese-Folklore Line: The Rewinder 2 and the First Game’s World of Strange Tales#
More than sci-fi, my heart belongs to the other end — Chinese folklore.
The Rewinder 2 is the sequel to the Chinese-style puzzle indie The Rewinder, developed by Yunshan Xiaoyu Studio, and it landed on Steam on May 26, 2025 at a standard price of 62 yuan with a 10% launch discount. First, the original: The Rewinder is a 2D Chinese-style yokai adventure-puzzle game released in 2021, long holding “Very Positive” on Steam. The player character, the dream-reverser Qiyun, is hired by the Black and White Wuchang to investigate why the souls of Luhe Village cannot reincarnate, and its “reverse-time puzzle” mechanic won the Best Design Award at the 2021 indiePlay China Independent Game Awards.
The sequel shifts the perspective from side-view to top-down and moves the timeline to the Netherworld Festival two years after the Luhe Village incident: the ghost market is open and lanterns are hung, but resentment invades and the underworld stands in peril, so Qiyun returns to the living world in search of a soul-purifying method — with the shadow of the White Lotus sect faintly behind the calamity. Gameplay keeps the “reverse-dream” puzzle foundation while adding skill unlocks, rune collection, and challenging maze exploration.
Two information points I need to flag for you:
- The sequel is already on sale; September 28 is not its first release. Earlier reports said the sequel would “launch” on multiple platforms on September 28 — per our verification, the PC (Steam) version of The Rewinder 2 shipped as early as May 26, 2025, and September 28 more likely corresponds to a console release (PS5/Xbox/NS) or a new-content drop; no official announcement has confirmed this, so defer to official word.
- The sequel’s Steam reception is currently polarized. Unlike the original’s “Very Positive”, the sequel’s positive rating now sits around 60% (review count still growing). If you hold high expectations for visuals and gameplay, check the recent reviews and gameplay footage before committing to a purchase pace.
3.1 The first game and the sequel, side by side#
| Dimension | The Rewinder | The Rewinder 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Release | 2021 (Steam Very Positive) | May 26, 2025 (Steam, 62 yuan) |
| Perspective | Side-view | Top-down |
| Setting | Late-Qing folklore; dream-reverser Qiyun investigates the Luhe Village mystery | Two years after the Luhe Village incident; resentment invades the Netherworld Festival |
| Gameplay | Reverse-time puzzles (indiePlay Best Design winner) | Reverse-dream puzzles + skills and runes + maze exploration |
| Developer | Yunshan Xiaoyu Studio | Yunshan Xiaoyu Studio |
3.2 What moves me about the Chinese-folklore art#
As an art editor, it’s hard for me not to be moved by this series. What I admire most about the original is how its 2D pixel-and-ink-wash visual language paints “strange tales” with restraint and precision — not through piled-up effects, but through negative space, composition, and character posture. The dream-reverser Qiyun, the Black and White Wuchang, the souls of Luhe Village that cannot reincarnate — all carry an eerie yet classical air.
Shifting from side-view to top-down is no small challenge for the art: a top-down view means redesigning scene depth, the layering of figures on the map, and the denser visual field that maze exploration demands. From the Steam store page and publisher materials, the sequel continues the pixel ink-wash aesthetic of Eastern strange tales, and the contrast between the underworld and the living world still lands. If Yunshan Xiaoyu can preserve the original’s restraint within the new perspective, then savoring a Netherworld Festival story by the fireside over the holiday would be a perfectly timed choice — just remember to check the reception first before you buy.
4. Art and Themes: Sci-Fi Reverie and Ink-Wash Folklore, Two Answers on One Timeline#
Spread this release window out and the Chinese-made content around September 28 splits into two very distinct thematic routes — one cold and one warm, one new and one ancient.
- The sci-fi route (Honkai: Star Rail 4.6): the Astral Express heads toward the Life Sciences Institute deep in the starport city — the Interastral Peace Corporation, the Elation Aeon, a planet-level conspiracy. Its visual ambition is grandeur, coldness, and technological sheen; Pearl’s “damage soak plus buff” kit will almost certainly lean on shield deployment and data-stream effects, worth watching in gameplay.
- The folklore route (The Rewinder series): ink-wash strange tales moving from side-view to top-down. This route’s visual ambition is negative space, restraint, and classical mood — it relies not on scale but on flavor, and the difficulty lies in telling something new on a more traditional canvas.
These two routes are really two answers Chinese games give along the same growth curve: one looks outward, exploring space and the unknown; one looks inward, revisiting culture and folklore. As an art editor, I’d argue the two don’t conflict at all — over the holiday, a player can ride the Astral Express through new story beats by day and solve a Netherworld Festival puzzle by the fireside at night. Tension and release, a perfectly balanced holiday.
5. A Few Practical Notes on Holiday Game Picks#
Finally, what this window actually means for ordinary players. Facing the update pile-up, my advice is simple: follow your own taste in themes, and don’t let the “pile-up” make you anxious.
- Watch the update timing and compensation threshold: Honkai: Star Rail 4.6 compensates Trailblazers at Trailblaze Level ≥4 before 06:00 on September 28, with maintenance landing early Monday morning. If you’re a veteran Trailblazer, get your level and login status squared away before maintenance to secure the 300 Stellar Jades.
- Distinguish “first release” from “platform version launch”: take The Rewinder 2 — the PC version shipped back in May 2025, and the circulating September 28 “launch” talk more likely refers to console versions. Always defer to official announcements before buying.
- Check the reception before you buy: a sequel’s quality can’t be bought on affection for the original alone; The Rewinder 2 currently sits at about 60% positive on Steam — read recent reviews and gameplay footage before deciding between day one and wait-and-see.
- Switching flavors is the better deal: sci-fi reverie and ink-wash folklore are perfectly staggered, so one holiday can hold two entirely different dishes instead of grinding on a single title.
Notes from the Editorial Desk#
As I set the keyboard down at the end of this piece, I went back to look at screenshots of the original The Rewinder. Qiyun stands in Luhe Village’s night, the shadows of the Black and White Wuchang stretched long — that eerie quality living inside the negative space stays with you more than any shouty horror ever could.
I used to think Chinese games’ greatest trump card was the “Chinese style” itself. These past two years I’ve slowly changed my mind — when a long-horizon sci-fi game runs its patches like a “version marathon”, and a folklore sequel dares to flip from side-view to top-down to retell a strange tale, two such opposite directions of effort suggest that Chinese games have finally reached the stage where they can “walk on both legs at once”. One has looked very far outward; the other has looked very deep inward.
The holiday is almost here. Whether you plan to greet Pearl aboard the Astral Express and push into the Life Sciences Institute’s new story, or sit by the fireside for a dream-reverser’s tale — may you play to your heart’s content. This September 28 is worth getting up a little earlier, so the game you want is patched and ready.
