Phantom Blade Zero Unlocks Tomorrow: Review Embargo Lifts with IGN 9/10 and a Launch-Eve Action Checklist

Long Zhuiri | October 28, 2026

Hello everyone, I’m Long Zhuiri. As I write this, roughly 138GB of Phantom Blade Zero preload is already sitting in my Steam download queue, and the remaining-space number on my hard drive is making me a little dizzy. At 10:00 tomorrow morning, Phantom Blade Zero officially unlocks — but what arrived earlier than the unlock itself is the launch reception: global review embargoes lifted on October 26, IGN scored it 9/10, and the Metacritic PC average is 88. The second major Chinese AAA title has collected a rather respectable report card on its launch eve.

This is the “launch eve” entry in our Phantom Blade Zero coverage line, and it draws a clear line against the previous three: the release-date watch covered pricing and wishlists, the final sprint roundup covered content scale and the Q4 window, and the pre-order data watch set the boundaries around third-party estimates. Information those pieces already covered is only touched on briefly here, with no rehashing of numbers. Today I am doing two things: first, walking through the shape of the launch reception to see where an 88 sits in the Chinese AAA sequence; second, giving players who have pre-ordered or plan to jump in tomorrow a launch-eve checklist they can follow directly.

One line of background for readers who have not followed along: players take the role of “Hun,” a strong warrior within the organization, with only 66 days left to find a new heart, and the story gradually uncovers a conspiratorial web hanging over the martial arts world as he travels. The developer is S-GAME of Beijing, built on Unreal Engine 5, with R&D investment approaching 400 million yuan.

I. Embargo Lift: IGN 9/10, Ten Perfect Scores, and One 6/10 Dissent#

Platform Average Overview#

Global review embargoes lifted on October 26. The scoring picture across platforms is as follows:

Scoring basis Score Notes
Metacritic PC 88 23 or more reviews collected; the count is still changing as the embargo rollout continues
Metacritic PS5 87-88 Within 1 point of the PC version
OpenCritic opening score 91 Later stabilized around 89
OpenCritic critic recommendation rate 100% Framing as of the first day of the embargo lift

Read together, these four rows say one plain thing: this is not one outlet’s favoritism, it is a consistent picture across platforms and across aggregators. OpenCritic opening at 91 and then settling slightly to around 89 is normal convergence after a major release lifts — the opening phase is usually the high-score peak as outlets race to publish, and as the sample grows it regresses toward the median. 89 is still a very hard tier.

Outlet Score Detail#

Outlet by outlet, the scores recorded in our fact cards are as follows:

Outlet Score Recorded assessment point
IGN 9/10 Called it “one of the best action games they’ve played in a while,” noting combat never grew stale across 50 hours of play
IGN China 10/10 Praised the combat system as “flowing like water,” and boss design as “breath-stealing”
TheGamer 10/10 One of the ten perfect scores
PCGamesN 10/10 One of the ten perfect scores
Wccftech 10/10 One of the ten perfect scores
3DM 10/10 One of the ten perfect scores
DualShockers 9.5/10 —
CGMagazine 95/100 —
GamesRadar+ 90/100 —
GameSpot 8/10 —
Eurogamer 6/10 Cited problems with balance and overall quality

(Where no assessment point is given, the fact card recorded only the score and did not relay a quotation; this article does not invent one.)

The perfect-score camp deserves a dedicated note: 10 outlets gave perfect scores, five of which are named in the table above. IGN’s 9/10 also came with a weighty qualifier — “one of the best action games they’ve played in a while” — which, combined with the temporal detail of “50 hours without combat growing stale,” directly answers the question action games fear most: this combat system built on high-speed offense and defense holds up over a long campaign.

The Coordinate System Around 88#

A single score means nothing; it only shows its position once placed in a coordinate system. Line up a few benchmark titles in the same action genre:

Title Metacritic OpenCritic
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice 90 92
Phantom Blade Zero 88 (PC) 91 (opening, later stabilized around 89)
Devil May Cry 5 88 —
Black Myth: Wukong 81 —

Phantom Blade Zero is level with Devil May Cry 5, one point below Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and roughly 7 points above Black Myth: Wukong — a new high for Chinese single-player games in media scoring. There are two layers worth chewing on in this arrangement.

The first layer is the quality of reception for “the second one.” Black Myth: Wukong, as the trailblazer of Chinese AAA, took 81. The second major title stepped straight onto 88 — reception rose rather than fell. The directions critics broadly affirm also match the score: the high-speed wuxia action system, boss fight design, and the “wuxia-punk” art style are widely recognized strengths, while weaknesses concentrate in story narrative and some visual detail. Put differently, the action system and art assets that nearly 400 million yuan of R&D bought covered for the narrative’s greenness.

The second layer is Eurogamer’s 6/10. Amid a field of 9s and perfect scores, that score stands out sharply, and the reason given was problems with balance and overall quality. I think the 6 has its own value: reception is never monolithic, and the single low vote at least demonstrates diversity in review standards — the perception of “balance” in an action game varies by person, and the offensive-defensive density the high-score camp prizes may read as a barrier to another group of critics. During launch week, high scores are the main theme and this 6 is dissonance — but dissonance is not noise. It reminds us that this 88 is not without its contested side.

II. Launch Editions and Platform Framing: 268 and 328, Twelve Months of Exclusivity#

Regional Pricing and Pre-Order Bonuses#

The hard information on launch editions is in the table below:

Edition China-region price Recorded contents
Digital Standard Edition 268 yuan Base game
Digital Deluxe Edition 328 yuan Also includes two exclusive outfits, “Wulin Legend” and “Bloodsteel Form,” plus a digital art book and digital soundtrack

Pre-order bonuses are two items: the accessory “Cornucopia” (increasing drop rate of the main currency “Remnant Dust” by 10%) and the “Inheritance” appearance. A finer breakdown of the edition structure is already covered in our pre-order and buying guide and is not repeated here. One reminder only: the “Cornucopia” bonus improves early-game resource accumulation efficiency — it is icing, not a gate item, so there is little need to rush a pre-order for it. Of course, with unlock tomorrow, the only remaining difference between pre-ordering and not is whether you get in at the first moment.

Console Exclusivity Window and Dual-Platform Scores#

On platform strategy, the official framing is at least 12 months of PS5 console exclusivity — meaning no other console platform within 12 months of launch. PC is there at launch, so this exclusivity affects the Xbox camp and other console platforms; PC players do not have to wait.

As for the experience gap between PS5 and PC, the only thing currently comparable is the score: 87-88 versus 88, a gap within 1 point. Concrete frame rate and resolution mode comparison data was not recorded in this round of intelligence, so this article makes no speculation and leaves it to post-unlock hands-on testing. Readers who want the spec homework: the four-tier spec table in section three below is for you.

III. Launch-Eve Action Checklist: Preload, Disk Space, and Specs#

First Thing: Set Your Unlock Clock#

The unlock times by time zone are as follows, synchronized across PC and PS5:

Time zone Unlock time
Beijing Time October 29, 10:00
US Eastern Time October 28, 22:00
US West Coast (Pacific Daylight Time) October 28, 19:00
United Kingdom (GMT) October 29, 02:00
Japan October 29, 11:00

For players in China, unlock is 10:00 tomorrow morning — no staying up late. This is the most comfortable unlock arrangement Chinese-region players could ask for.

Second Thing: Disk Space, the Hard 300GB Threshold#

Preload opened at 10:00 Beijing Time on October 27 (22:00 US Eastern on October 26). The official disk requirement is the hardest line of this launch:

Item Official framing
Storage medium Must be installed on a solid-state drive (SSD)
Preload reserve At least 300GB of free space
After installation completes Footprint falls back to roughly 145GB
Actual download size Some players report roughly 138GB downloaded from Steam

The reason the reserved space far exceeds the final size: per the official explanation, under the pre-download mechanism the temporary cache and the complete files must coexist at the moment of unlock, so 300GB is required. In other words, 300GB is the peak footprint when “download cache plus base game” share the drive at the same time, not the game’s final size — after installation wraps up it falls back to roughly 145GB. That explains why many players report an actual download of around 138GB: what is downloaded is the encrypted packaged file, which expands into the base game at unlock.

Accordingly, here is the launch-eve disk checklist. Follow it item by item:

  1. Confirm the install drive is a solid-state drive — mechanical hard drives are not officially supported, and this one is not negotiable;
  2. Confirm the install drive has no less than 300GB free — if it does not, clean up or move files first, do not expect to improvise at the last minute;
  3. Do not install it on the system drive and squeeze the OS — an Unreal Engine 5 title puts real disk read/write pressure on expansion, so leave the system plenty of headroom;
  4. If you have not started the preload, go hit download on Steam right now — at roughly 138GB, do not push the whole thing to tomorrow morning.

Third Thing: Self-Check Against the Four Spec Tiers#

The official four-tier spec framing is as follows:

Tier Official framing Target result
Minimum 8th-gen Core i7 or Ryzen 5 3600, 16GB RAM, GTX 1660 6GB 1080p 30fps
Recommended i5-10600K or Ryzen 5 5600X, RTX 3060 Ti 8GB 1440p 60fps
Ray tracing RTX 5060 8GB 1080p 60fps
Path tracing Starts at RTX 5080 16GB —

Two reminders: first, both the minimum and recommended tiers require super-resolution reconstruction to be enabled — the paper frame rates are built on top of upscaling, so do not compare against a native-render standard. Second, the GPU thresholds for the ray tracing and path tracing tiers cross two generations, RTX 5060 and RTX 5080; for most players, ray-traced play is a bonus rather than a default. Getting a stable 1440p 60fps on the recommended tier matters more than anything else. Our editorial colleague Zixing added a point: day-one driver support for Unreal Engine 5 projects is often unsettled, so updating your GPU driver before jumping in on the first day or two after unlock is the cheapest troubleshooting move available.

IV. Physical Discs in 2027, and a Comment-Section Storm#

The Official Timeline#

On physical discs, the official announcement came at the end of the final trailer: physical discs will arrive in 2027. Combined with the “at least 12 months of PS5 console exclusivity” framing, the complete launch-period timeline is — digital first, 12 months of console exclusivity, physical discs a year later. There is also industry background in the middle: Sony previously announced that production of physical discs for new PlayStation games will stop from January 2028. Put the three facts together and the 2027 physical disc looks more like a window left open for collector demand than a long-term distribution strategy.

A Comment-Section Storm That Reached This Game#

The phenomenon itself deserves honest recording: on October 26, the official PlayStation account posted promoting this game with the line “You only have 66 days to save the wulin.” The post drew 888,000 views and over three hundred comments, with a large number of players expressing dissatisfaction with Sony’s physical disc policy, saying things like “no disc, no sale from me.”

What should be made clear is that this dissatisfaction targets Sony’s disc policy, not Phantom Blade Zero itself — the official promotional post simply became the venue where opinions concentrated, and this game was pulled in passively. The effect on the player side, however, is direct: if you want a disc version on PS5, you wait until 2027; everyone buying the PS5 version at launch is buying digital. As for the industry-level question of whether physical discs survive, that deserves its own article and is not expanded on here.

V. Day-One Watch Points and Observation List#

What to Watch on Unlock Day#

  • The 10:00 Beijing Time unlock moment: whether the switch from preloaded files to complete files goes smoothly, plus server and unlock queue conditions — the first hurdle of launch day;
  • Player-side reception arriving: the media 88 is a critical perspective; ordinary players’ feedback on boss difficulty and optimization performance will start flooding in from this morning, and that is what determines the long tail;
  • The awards line: the game has been shortlisted for Best Game of the Year at the 2026 Golden Joystick Awards, with voting closing at 07:59 Beijing Time on October 31 and the winner announced in London on November 11. As for other game-of-the-year awards, official nominations have not been announced; probability data on third-party prediction platforms is public-opinion framing, not fact, so take it as entertainment.

Observation List#

Observation point Current status
Metacritic review count 23 or more, still changing as the embargo rollout continues
Concrete PS5 vs PC experience gap Only a score gap; no public comparison data on frame rates or resolution modes
Official sales figures S-GAME has not disclosed pre-order or sales numbers; pre-order data exists only as third-party institutional estimates — see our dedicated article
Physical disc timing Confirmed for 2027, specific date unannounced
Golden Joystick result Voting closes October 31; announced in London on November 11

One last route note for new readers: the launch-eve homework is already assembled in our Phantom Blade Zero database section — story, combat, art, and pre-order topics are available as needed. After launch we will update the section based on actual unlock experience, and at that point the information on these preview pages will be checked against the answers item by item.

Editorial Table Talk#

With the piece finished, the editorial desk had its usual chat. Zixing stared at the four-tier spec table and sighed: a GTX 1660 at the minimum tier for 1080p 30fps is a fair threshold by AAA standards, but the 300GB disk requirement shuts out anyone on a small-capacity SSD — “the specs give you a step up, the disk takes the step away.” Indigo Blade brought up the other thing: the promotional post’s comment section was flooded with disc-policy complaints and the game itself became backdrop — “the disc hasn’t arrived, but the fire has.” My own feeling is simpler: from date announcement to unlock, every step this game has taken has been in the open — pricing face-up, content scale face-up, specs face-up, and now reception face-up too. An 88 is not a shield, and Eurogamer’s 6 is not necessarily a dose of clarity. After 10:00 tomorrow morning, it is the players’ turn to vote with their own controllers.

Clear out your hard drive tonight. See you in the Shadow Realm tomorrow.
