NVIDIA DLSS 5 Official Launch: The Official Line on 3D-Guided Neural Rendering, Fully Explained#
Hello everyone, I’m Zixing. On September 3, 2026 (Pacific Time), NVIDIA officially launched DLSS 5, whose core technology is named 3D-Guided Neural Rendering. At 12:00 Beijing time on September 4, together with the GeForce Game Ready driver, players can now flip the “DLSS Neural Rendering” switch themselves in the video settings of the launch game, NBA 2K27.
This is the main article of this site’s DLSS 5 series. The site’s earlier DLSS 5 Preview Analysis was written before the official launch, and its speculative content diverged from the final official line; it has since been fully rewritten per the official press release. This article lays out the verified official information from after the launch in one place, and states clearly which data officials have not yet published.
1. Launch Dates: Two Events, Two Timezones#
DLSS 5’s launch is not a single point in time: the official announcement and the technical availability are two events one day apart, and NVIDIA’s English and Chinese releases state them in different timezones. To avoid misreading, this article records both in a unified “timezone + event” table.
| Date and timezone | Event | Nature |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-09-03 (Pacific Time) | NVIDIA officially announces DLSS 5 | Official announcement node |
| 2026-09-04 12:00 (Beijing Time) | GeForce Game Ready driver release; the “DLSS Neural Rendering” option opens in NBA 2K27 | Driver and in-game availability node |
To emphasize: the September 3 announcement is the technical reveal node; the point at which players can actually flip the switch in a game comes after the driver and the in-game option open at noon Beijing time on September 4. Always attach a timezone when citing launch dates — writing only “announced September 3, live September 4” invites misreading.
2. Six Months from Reveal to Launch: The Compute Threshold Shrinks#
DLSS 5 did not appear out of nowhere on launch day. Per NVIDIA’s official Chinese press release, its public evolution path is:
| Milestone | Official claim |
|---|---|
| March 2026 | NVIDIA first reveals DLSS 5 |
| At reveal | Required two GeForce RTX 5090s to run |
| Six months later | Runs on a single GPU, with officials citing a 5x performance gain |
| Fall 2026 (planned) | Officials say a model update will further improve performance on the existing foundation |
This evolution is the key background for understanding DLSS 5’s hardware requirements: neural rendering’s compute threshold at reveal was very high, and in six months officials compressed “two flagship cards” down to “single-card operation”. As for the conditions of that 5x performance gain, the official wording covers only the “from two RTX 5090s to single-card operation” evolution itself; this article does not extrapolate it.
3. 3D-Guided Neural Rendering: What It Actually Does#
3.1 The Fundamental Difference from DLSS 1–4#
Per NVIDIA’s official line, DLSS 1–4 “add to or subtract from” an existing image: super resolution fills in resolution, frame generation fills intermediate frames, ray reconstruction cleans noise — all based on the 2D image itself. DLSS 5 changes that basic assumption — it takes game-engine rendered frames as the base and hands the engine’s already-computed color, motion vector, lighting, and surface information to the neural network as guidance signals to repaint the final image.
The official emphasis is on the word “guidance”: the AI does not blind-guess from a 2D image; it paints using the 3D data the engine supplies. That is what “3D-guided” means.
3.2 Deterministic Mode: Single Frame In, Single Frame Out, Temporally Stable#
DLSS 5 uses a deterministic mode with single-frame input, single-frame output, and temporal stability. Per the official explanation, this meets games’ absolute requirements on three points:
| Requirement | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Pixel-level consistency | The same input produces consistent output, with no per-frame drift |
| Character identity lock | Characters’ appearances stay stable through repainting, without distortion |
| Input-driven frame-to-frame stability | The image changes as the input changes, with no flicker between frames |
Officials also gave a comparison: traditional diffusion models output something different for the same prompt every time, and that nondeterminism cannot be used in real-time games. DLSS 5’s deterministic mode exists precisely to bypass this problem.
3.3 Developers’ Artistic Control Tools#
Officials demonstrated the per-pixel uplift control mask: developers can set an overall color style and fine-tune key regions such as characters. Peter Kavic, Senior Producer at Visual Concepts, gave an example in the official materials of using this capability to respect characters’ appearances.
4. Official Performance Claims: Every Item Tagged with Conditions#
Below are all performance-related statements given officially. Each carries its conditions; do not generalize any single item into an all-scenarios conclusion.
| Scenario and conditions | Official claim |
|---|---|
| NBA 2K27 at 1920×1080, Ultra preset, ray tracing on, RTX 50 series | Nearly all RTX 50 series players can use the Ultra preset and DLSS 5 at the same time |
| 4K resolution + ray tracing, GeForce RTX 5090 D v2, DLSS enabled | Frame rates can rise to 370 FPS |
| Overall positioning | Combined with neural rendering, super resolution, and multi-frame generation, DLSS 5 can deliver higher frame rates and significantly improve image quality |
| Historical comparison (cited officially) | The DLSS 4.5 technology stack can use AI to draw 23 of every 24 pixels on screen |
| Compute evolution (cited officially) | Counted from GeForce 3’s programmable shaders (2001), GeForce-generation compute has grown 375,000-fold cumulatively |
The 370 FPS item especially needs its conditions attached: it is the official figure for the specific combination of “4K + ray tracing + RTX 5090 D v2” and cannot be extended to other cards, other resolutions, or other games. The RTX 5090 D v2 is a China-market model that differs from models in other regions.
4.1 The Official Image Quality Descriptions#
Officials say DLSS 5 gives Jayson Tatum in NBA 2K27 natural skin subsurface scattering, fine beard lighting and shadow, and deeper contact shadows on the jersey and basketball surfaces. These three details are the image quality examples given in the official press release and belong to the verifiable official line.
4.2 Data Not Published Officially#
NVIDIA has not published the following data, and this site will not speculate:
- Per-item overhead or loss percentages for neural rendering — no such data published;
- A complete per-GPU frame rate table under DLSS 5 — officials published only the scenarios listed in the table above;
- DLSS 5 performance in games beyond NBA 2K27 — must be verified game by game; this site writes nothing unverified.
5. Launch Support Scope: More Than RTX 50 Series Desktop Cards#
This is where the site’s earlier article erred most heavily, and this article corrects it per the official line: DLSS 5’s launch support covers all GeForce RTX 50 series GPUs including laptop GPUs, plus GeForce NOW — not desktop cards only, and there is no closed boundary of “RTX 50 series only”.
| Platform | Status at launch |
|---|---|
| GeForce RTX 50 series desktop GPUs | Launch support |
| GeForce RTX 50 series laptop GPUs | Launch support |
| GeForce NOW | Launch support |
| GeForce RTX 40 series | Officials state it will expand to RTX 40 series later; delivery timing not announced |
| Other platforms | No support plan announced |
The RTX 40 series expansion is currently an official statement, not yet delivered. Its timing, model coverage, and performance have not been published; this site will not speculate, and further progress should follow NVIDIA’s official press releases. The site also has a dedicated article on that statement: DLSS 5 and the RTX 40 Series: The Official Expansion Statement and Current Support Boundaries.
6. The Player Onboarding Path#
| Step | Action | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Get the driver | Download via the NVIDIA App or GeForce.cn (available from 12:00 Beijing time on 09-04) |
| 2 | Enable in-game | Turn on “DLSS Neural Rendering” in the game’s video settings |
| 3 | Toggle anytime | Press the F9 key in games and replays to switch the neural rendering switch |
F9’s instant toggle is very useful for self-comparison: in the same scene, one press of F9 shows the before/after image difference directly. For more detail on driver versions and in-game options, defer to NVIDIA’s official press release and driver notes.
